National Wildlife Week

Source: http://bit.ly/15Nh8ei

The 75th annual National Wildlife Week takes place from March 18th-24th. Sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation (www.nwf.org), the theme for 2013 is “Branching Out for Wildlife” with a focus on celebrating “trees and their importance to wildlife and people” (http://www.nwf.org/National-Wildlife-Week.aspx). This year, the NWF is sponsoring the planting of 75,000 trees with the assistance of school children and youth groups across the country.

Check out some of the library’s resources related to wildlife here:

Students, faculty, and staff can access biological sciences databases such as Web of Science (thousands of high impact journals in the sciences and other disciplines), ScienceDirect (the library’s largest scientific database), and BioOne (includes peer-reviewed materials in the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences).

Plant a tree if you can and save a tree by using some of the library’s fabulous digital resources!

Library student selected for prestigious internship

Library Lab Assistant Helena Mallonee has been selected to be a Keck Geology Consortium summer intern. This means that this summer, instead of helping Boise State students navigate computers and printing in the library, Helena, along with five other Keck students, will spend 10 days mapping basaltic lava flow features in the Zuni-Bandera Volcanic Field in New Mexico. From New Mexico, Helena will continue on to Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where she will work with Chris Hamilton and Jake Bleacher of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. While there, she will learn to work with Martian remote sensing datasets in an effort to understand lava flow emplacement on Mars.

This isn’t the first time Helena has spent her summer out of doors. She has previously worked as an Interpretive Park Ranger at Craters of the Moon National Monument, as well as working as an intern Cave Technician and Speleologist with the GeoCorps of America & BLM’s Shoshone Field Office. She will return in to the fall as she begins work on her senior thesis.

Charge and sanitize!

In case you haven't noticed we've made incremental changes to the library, all to make your research time valuable and healthy.

For starters you can charge your device with our charging station, located next to Starbucks. Let your device take a breather and recharge while you do the same.

The awesome folks at Heath Services provided us with 6 hand sanitizer stations. These units are located throughout the building: 2 on the 1st floor and 2nd floor and 1 each on the 3rd and 4th floor.

Have ideas or suggestions to make your library stay better? Let us know!

Copies of "The Idea of Nature" Public Lecture Series Available Through ScholarWorks

In spring 2012, a new public lecture series, Ideas of Nature, began at Boise State University. The goal of the series is to promote interdisciplinary inquiry and to foster dialogue across the campus and community, based on the premise that big questions need interdisciplinary answers.

How are conceptions of nature expressed in literature, art, philosophy, music, and other humanities disciplines? How did ideas of nature change from 1660 to the present, a period of radical change and revolution?

The lecture series is continuing on March 12th when Dr. Dan Philippon, University of Montana, will
lecture on the “Slow Food” movement in Europe. Although Slow Food is often portrayed as a contrast to fast food, it is less about speed than scale. Visits with artisan food producers in Italy's Piedmont region, where Slow Food was born, illustrate the weaknesses in the romantic understanding of nature as "other" and confirm that scale is the key variable in the search for sustainability.

All lectures are free and open to the public and videos of past presentations can be downloaded from ScholarWorks:
Each video is made available with a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0 License.

March is Red Cross Month

In 1943 President Franklin Delano Roosevelt proclaimed that March was Red Cross Month. Every American President since Roosevelt has kept to that tradition.

The American Red Cross provides disaster relief; collects blood and provides more than 40% of all blood products used in America; provides CPR and first aid certification; gives training for babysitters and lifeguards; and offers support services to military families. To celebrate Red Cross Month, consider donating blood, or volunteering your time.

Check out some of the Albertsons Library health science resources available at this guide: http://guides.boisestate.edu/health_sciences.

All students, staff and faculty can access health science databases such as MEDLINE (the largest medical database in the world), CINAHL (our premier nursing and allied health database) and ScienceDirect (the largest scientific database in our collection). Many eBooks are also available, both through the R2 Digital Library and through the WorldCat Local search box on the Library’s homepage (http://library.boisestate.edu).

Come check out our health science resources and celebrate Red Cross Month.
