The Albertsons Library is wired for Wi-Fi so whether you use your own laptop or portable device you are always connected. We also offer netbooks and laptops (PCs and Macs) for checkout, but did you know you can also check out an iPad to use in the library?

Two New Digital Collections From Special Collections

There are two new additions to the library's digital collections page at the link below.

The Lyman Wilbur Afghanistan Collection contains color slides taken by Wilbur in 1957 and 1958. Wilbur, vice president of the Boise company Morrison-Knudsen, took the slides during his visits to Afghanistan to inspect M-K's dam and irrigation construction projects in that country.

The Peter Beemer Manuscript Collection contains handwritten musical scores recorded in the 1860s by Beemer in the mining camp of Warren, Idaho, of songs and dance music performed by his band and others. Videos of modern performances of several of the pieces are also included in the digital collection.

eBooks from Albertsons Library

In Fall 2011, over 55,000 new eBooks were added to the Albertsons Library collection through the EBL platform. These eBooks are immediately available, providing access to information, 24x7, wherever users are located.

Faculty and students are using eBooks in a variety of ways including eBooks for research projects and coursework; eBooks for course reserves; and eBooks for the new Fall 2012 University Foundations classes. EBL books are available through the Library catalog (http://boisestate.worldcat.org/) or from the EBL (http://www.boisestate.eblib.com/) database.

The eBooks cover a wide array of academic disciplines—from immunology to higher education to art history. The Library’s eBooks are accessible to University students, faculty and staff. More than one person can use an eBook at the same time. No returns needed! The majority of eBooks available through the Library can be read online or downloaded to a desktop, laptop, or mobile device.

New Exhibit in Special Collections

A new exhibit in the windows of the Special Collections department on the library's second floor features images from the Idaho Statesman photograph collection. The collection contains over one million images and spans 1950-1993. The images were taken by photographers of the newspaper and cover a variety of subjects such as everyday life in Boise, city buildings and events, and activities at Boise State University.

Some of these pictures were printed in the newspaper, however, most of the collection has never been published. It is one of the most heavily used resources in Special Collections, and scholars and researchers have used the images in a variety of publications. This exhibit focuses on the early days of Bogus Basin, downtown Boise, Latino life in Idaho, the new Boise Junior College campus and Bronco athletics, and the YWCA.

Campus Read Keynote Lecture

David “Sonny” Lacks, son of the title subject in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 3, in the Student Union Simplot Ballroom. The lecture, presented by the Campus Read committee, is free and open to the public.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, by Rebecca Skloot, tells the story of Henrietta Lacks, known to scientists as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells -- taken without her knowledge in 1951-- became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, gene mapping and more. Lacks’ cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can’t even afford health insurance.

Sonny Lacks will speak about his mother and her important contribution to modern medicine and will share what it meant to find out, decades after the fact, that his mother’s cells were being used in laboratories around the world.

Alan Virta Retirement Reception is October 27

Welcome new librarian: Marilia Antunez

I joined the Albertsons Library as Reference/Instruction Librarian on July 25th. Prior to coming to Boise State, I worked as the Science and Allied Health Librarian at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.

I serve as Library Liaison for Criminal Justice, Sociology, and co-liaison for the School of Social Work. I have an MLS (in library science) and an MA in Gerontology.

Welcome new librarian: Carrie Moore

Hello Boise State!! My name is Carrie Moore, and I am a new Reference Librarian, as of July, here at the Albertsons Library. My office is located on the 1st floor of the library (107 A) along the same wall as the Starbucks. So, if you’re stopping into the library to do some work or just a cup of coffee, please stop by my office and say “Hi”.

A couple of the areas I will be working closely with throughout the year are the Communication Department, English Department, First Year Writing Program, and the Campus Read. But, I’m looking forward to working with ALL of the great people here on campus!

A native of Iowa, I graduated from Briar Cliff College (located in Sioux City, IA for those who are curious) with a Bachelor’s degree in biology and psychology. I received my Masters of Library Science (M.L.S.) from Emporia State University in Emporia, KS. But most recently, I am coming to Boise from Detroit, MI, where I was a librarian at Wayne State University for 8 ½ years.

During my time at Wayne State, I was the librarian for the College of Engineering, Mathematics, Environmental Sciences and Communication Sciences and Disorders. As well as being the Coordinator of Collections for Public Services.

So far, my family and I are really enjoying Idaho! We have been going on many outdoor adventures throughout the state, and if you have suggestions for great locations to explore in the region send them our way. I look forward to hearing from you.

Using digital technology to solve a century-old mystery in Special Collections

For more than a century, the old ledger book was a mystery. Inside were the names of some of the most prominent men in 19th century Idaho, as well as some obscure ones, with a record of the dues they paid to an organization during the years 1884-1887. Nowhere in the book, however, was the name of the organization recorded. And no one seemed to know.

Donated to Albertsons Library Special Collections in 1989, the ledger book stumped all the Idaho historians who examined it. It came from the historic Warm Springs Avenue home of C.W. Moore (1835-1916), prominent businessman and banker in Boise. His name is one of 75 in the book, so it was presumed to be connected to one of his many activities. But even Carol Lynn MacGregor, who donated the ledger to Boise State along with other historic records from C.W. Moore and his descendants, did not know its origin. Nor did any other living members of the family. The occupations of the well-known men in the book--bankers, merchants, hoteliers, a brewer, a clergyman--did not reveal a common thread. The best guess was that it belonged to some long-forgotten social organization.

The power of digital technology finally unlocked the mystery. Earlier this summer, twenty-two years after he first accessioned the book as an "unidentified ledger," Boise State University archivist Alan Virta turned to the Idaho Statesman Historical Archive, a new online database available from the Boise Public Library containing digitized copies of every issue of the city's oldest newspaper between 1864 and 1922. The beauty of the digital database is that every word is indexed via OCR (optical character recognition), and thus searchable. Virta hoped that by searching for the names of some of the people listed in the book he might find articles linking them to a common organization. And it was only a matter of minutes, on his fifth search, that he struck pay dirt. On entering the name G.W. Gess, he found an article from 1886 naming Gess as a newly-elected officer of the Central Idaho Stock Growers' Association. C.W. Moore, in whose home the ledger was kept for more than 100 years, was named as the organization's president. Every one of the other twelve officers listed in the article was also listed in the ledger. So a century's old mystery was solved. With the name in hand, it was easy to learn more about the association. Again, with only a few keystrokes at his computer, Virta was able to find an online electronic edition of the 1885 publication "Marks and Brands of the Central Idaho Stock Growers' Association." The electronic edition, made from an original copy in the Newberry Library in Chicago, was purchased by Boise State a year ago. A pictorial record of some of the earliest brands used in the state, it can be consulted via the Library's catalog at library.boisestate.edu. No paper copies of the original publication are known to be in Idaho; only the Newberry, the University of Arizona, and Texas A & M University list original copies in their catalogs.

The case of the unidentified ledger is a prime example of the value of digital collections. As for the Central Idaho Stock Growers' Association, it apparently was short-lived. Both the ledger and the association's brand register indicated that it was founded in 1884. The Idaho Statesman Historical Archive reveals no articles about it after December 1886, a few months before the ledger ends. With its ledger book finally identified, the only mystery remaining now is why the Central Idaho Stock Growers' Association, representing one of the most important industries in the state, was disbanded after only a few short years.

Nell Shipman Digital Collection

The Special Collections Department has mounted a new digital collection of photos documenting the life and career of Nell Shipman, a silent film star and movie maker in the 1910s and 1920s. Shipman's papers and photos were donated to the department in 1988 by her son Barry.

Archivists Converge on Boise State for Annual Conference

Fifty archivists from the states of Idaho, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona will gather at Boise State University on Friday, May 20 for the annual meeting of the Conference of Inter-Mountain Archivists.

Hosted this year by Albertsons Library Special Collections, the conference will explore current archival topics with the theme "Western Voices and Western Leadership: Archival Identity and Outreach in the Inter-Mountain West."

The conference begins with a reception and tour at the Basque Museum and Cultural Center Thursday evening. Barton Barbour, professor of history and author of a recent book on Western explorer Jedediah Smith, will be the luncheon speaker.

Finals Week: Library Open 24 Hours

The Albertsons Library will be open 24 hours a day for Finals Week. During the late night hours, staff will be on hand to answer questions and check out first-floor reserve materials. Normally only the first floor is open 24 hours during Finals Week, but this semester will be even better: we will have the second floor open as well, which includes the library's computer classroom, L203, with its 30 additional computers.

For Finals Week (1st & 2nd floors only):

Sunday, May 8 open at 10:00 AM until Thursday, May 12 close at 7:00 PM
Friday, May 13, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Saturday, CLOSED

Free coffee and treats will be provided each night (while supplies last!) by the Associated Students of Boise State University (ASBSU). An officer from the Boise Police Department will be on duty in the library all night and can provide escort service as needed.

Albertsons Library is using QR codes to give smartphone users access to the library's mobile-friendly resources, such as the library's website, research databases, extensive subject guides, and text reference help. Scanning a QR code is a quick way to transfer information from online or printed material to your phone without typing it in. You also retain that information in your device for future reference.

Albertsons Library is pleased to announce our second now-biannual orientation event for English 101 classes, Library 101. The event, which will take place on March 9 and 10, 2011, will bring fifteen sections of English 101 to the library to learn about our resources, in print, online, and human (meaning: our wonderful staff and librarians).

This is our second Library 101 event; the previous event took place during Fall 2010 semester on October 9-10, 2010, and brought 40 sections of English 101 to the library.

We look forward to having so many of our newer students in the library next week! For those of you in English 101 sections who will be joining us, welcome! Boise State Scholarship Downloaded 100,000 Times

This February, ScholarWorks recorded its 100,000^th full-text download. Launched in 2009, ScholarWorks is specifically designed to showcase Boise State scholarship and helps remove access barriers to publicly funded research.

The collection includes faculty publications, graduate scholarship, university publications, conference information, and institutional documents. In recent months the use of ScholarWorks has increased significantly with a high of over 12,000 Boise State documents downloaded in just November 2010 alone.

In addition to providing access to scholarship produced at Boise State, the service also provides SelectedWorks sites that highlight individual faculty member’s professional accomplishments.

Are you wondering what this square graphic represents? It's a QR code. Developed in Japan, a QR code (short for "Quick Response" code) is a barcode that contains information that can be read by a mobile device, usually a web-enabled phone with a camera.

The information within a QR code can vary--it can be a phone number, a website link, a link to play a video, a link to map directions, and more.

What do I need?
To decipher the code you need a web-enabled phone with a camera, and a decoding application called a barcode scanner. These scanner apps are freely available for a variety of mobile devices--you can pick a scanner app from this list: http://bit.ly/fJGqz9

How do I scan this QR code?
After downloading and launching a code scanner application, simply point your device's camera at the QR code and the app will reveal the information in your device by linking you there, usually using your device's web browser. For example, scanning the QR code above will take you to the library's mobile website.

Why should I use it?

Scanning a QR code is a quick way to transfer information from online or printed material to your phone without typing it in. You also retain that information in your device for future reference. QR codes make the transmission of data from static to mobile quick and simple.

Canada Display at the Library

Learning Express Library offers online practice admission tests, skills-enhancing tutorials for math, writing, Adobe software, Microsoft Office software, and tutorials for writing resumes and cover letters. Additional practice tests in LearningExpress include GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, GRE, TOEFL, ACT, Praxis, PPST, and GED. University Author Recognition Reminder

Albertsons Library’s annual University Author Recognition celebrates articles, books, and creative works produced at Boise State University. The 6th annual University Author Recognition will take place on February 24, 2011, in Albertsons Library from 3:30-5:00 p.m.

Citations are still being accepted until December 3, 2010, for works created between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2010. It is easy to submit a citation of your work; just go to http://library.boisestate.edu/faculty and click on “Send Citations.” A faculty member has the option to review and edit information before submitting citations, including multiple citations from a single creator. The draft bibliography is updated in real-time; please take a moment to look over the draft bibliography, as your citation may already have been entered by library staff.

Recognition events for the 6th annual bibliography include:

A comprehensive online bibliography of scholarly and creative works by Boise State University faculty created between September 1, 2009 and August 31, 2010.
A display of the creative works in Albertsons Library in January-February 2011
A hosted reception in Albertsons Library on February 24, 2011, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. with a short program beginning at 4:00 p.m. The university community is invited to meet those being recognized and applaud their scholarship and creativity.

The most recent episode of Idaho Public Television's "Outdoor Idaho" program featured a number of photos from the Library's Frank Church manuscript collection. Entitled "Wilderness in the 21st Century," the program examines the history and future of wilderness areas in Idaho. ESPN GameDay and BSU Football History

To celebrate Boise State University hosting ESPN GameDay on September 25, the Special Collections department in Albertsons Library contributed historical photographs and moving image footage of old football games towards the creation of this video created by ESPN, which aired both during GameDay footage on television and on their website. The video looks back at Boise State's steady climb from humble beginnings as Boise Junior College to its prominence as a nationally ranked football team.

Meet Julia, New Archivist in Special Collections!

Hello, BSU community! I am the new archivist in Special Collections and have been here since July. Before this position, I was the archivist at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin (Go Packers!). Prior to that, I served as Project Archivist of the Southeast Asian Archive at the University of California, Irvine.

I received a Master of Library and Information Science degree and a Master's of History degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I also received a Bachelor of Music degree from Ouachita University.

In my new position I will be working with the University Archives part of Special Collections and working with university records. I will also be working with digital collections that include university materials.

New Exhibit in Special Collections

A new exhibit commemorating the 40th anniversary of the opening of Bronco Stadium was recently installed in the front exhibit windows of Special Collections on the second floor of the library. Construction of Bronco Stadium began in 1969, and it was dedicated on September 11, 1970, during the football game of BSU v. Chico State that BSU won with the final score being 49-14.

The stadium was built at a cost of $2.2 million and originally contained 14,500 seats. The exhibit is comprised of photographs, newspaper articles, programs, and other memorabilia on the stadium. Additional images of Bronco Stadium can be viewed in the digital collection Historic Boise State located on the Special Collections website.

Recycled Poetry Contest results

Last week in honor of the Campus Read author visit on Wednesday, Albertsons Library held a Recycled Poetry Contest in which we cut up photocopied pages from the Campus Read book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, and invited students to create original poetry using the words from the book (along the lines of Magnetic Poetry, but without the magnets).

The contest took place during a three-hour fair on the quad, and students had to make up poems on the spot! We were delighted to receive 27 submissions, all of which were excellent, and we all had a great time playing with words at the fair.

We have a winner! Our three judges -- Janet Holmes and Tom Hillard from English, and Sara Seely from the Library -- reviewed all the submissions and ranked their top three. It was quite a challenge with all those wonderful entries, but only one could win. One poem appeared on all three of our judges' lists: the "Circle Poem by Ben." Congratulations to Ben for his winning poem! He will receive a $20.00 gift card to Starbucks.

Thanks so much to everyone who helped make our contest a success! We all had a great time and will plan to do this again next year.

Library Hosts Photo Exhibition Featuring Farm Workers’ Struggle

Fifteen photos by Claudio Beagarie documenting the struggle of California farm workers for social and economic justice in the 1960s will be on display at the Albertsons Library through Labor Day.

Beagarie, a community activist with a commitment to progressive causes, captured images of farm workers in their homes, in the fields and marching with Cesar Chavez, cofounder of the United Farm Workers of America and the best-known leader of the movement.

The images chronicle some of the dramatic moments of the struggle in 1966 and 1967 — the grape boycott, the march from Delano to Sacramento and the rally in San Francisco — as well as scenes of the everyday life and work of the mainly Latino and Filipino farm workers.

“I have been deeply involved in the Latin American community for the past 40 years,” states Beagarie, who now lives in Boise and holds a degree in geology from Boise State. “I have been an activist and have chronicled events with both pen and camera. By utilizing a candid photo style, I seek to capture the enthusiasm of people involved in struggle. I seek to record the times of happiness and sadness, their times of triumph and defeat. I view my photography as an investigative research tool, as photos can be analyzed at a later date for cultural meanings that are not evident at the time of shooting.”

The 11×14-inch photos are on display in the Special Collections exhibit windows on the library’s second floor and can be viewed whenever the library is open. To check library hours, visit library.boisestate.edu/calendar/main.php.

Listen now! Free mobile streaming music through library databases

Smart phone users, rejoice! Alexander Street Press, publisher of our streaming music databases Classical Music Library, Jazz Music Library, and Smithsonian Global Sound for Libraries, has made their spectacular collections of high-quality streaming music available to the mobile user. By scanning QR codes, such as those in this blog post, you can launch right into specially selected playlists (for instance, the QR code at left links to a playlist for French Bastille Day; QR code below right links to an e-album of music from the movie Pride & Prejudice).

As you browse the database, look for the cell phone icon: . Clicking that icon from your smart phone will bring up the mobile player, while clicking from a computer will automatically generate a textable shortlink and scannable QR code for the album or playlist. Don't forget that these great databases allow you to create your own playlists, too! The only apparent drawback is that (unlike listening on your computer) mobile access only allows you to play one track at a time and can't run a group of songs in continuous playback -- but if you figure out how to do that, please let us know!

The service is currently available from the three above databases for all Android and iPhone devices, including the iPod Touch and iPad. Later in 2010, you can expect more streaming access! The publisher is planning to add its nine video collections, including American History in Video, Dance in Video, and Ethnographic Video Online.

New Digital Collection: Doc Roach Fire Collection

Spectacular fires, historic firefighting equipment, and Boise city streetscapes are among the images preserved in the Doc Roach Fire Digital Collection in Boise State University Library. A Boise city firefighter for more than 50 years, Doc was one of the few firemen who worked from the days of horse-drawn fire engines, witnessed the introduction of motorized equipment in 1912, and also used gasoline pump trucks. Doc Roach was not a photographer himself, but rather a collector of photographs documenting the fire fighters, equipment, major fires, and fire prevention education in Boise from 1911-1965. These photographs also document the growth of Boise from a small town to a city in the first half of the 20th century, including shots taken of the greater downtown area, capturing changes in transportation and buildings.

The Doc Roach Fire Digital Collection features 70 images from 1904 to 1965 and is drawn primarily from Doc Roach's photograph collection and is supplemented by related images from other collections in Boise State University Library Special Collections.

Congratulations to BSU Student Employee of the Year

Great students make a great library! We're proud to announce that Jonathan Donahue, our amazing Lab Manager in Library Computer Services, has been named the recipient of the Boise State University 2009-2010 Student Employee of the Year award.

You may have seen him around the library keeping our lab computers running smoothly. Jon has worked as Lab Manager for the last two years while pursuing his Computer Science and Math degrees. He has demonstrated not only the advanced technical skills required by the position but he also brings to the job a terrific attitude -- he's courteous, patient, and positive, and best of all he's always attentive to the needs of library coworkers, faculty, and students.

He has far exceeded expectations in every area. Jon is Albertsons Library's first recipient of the award, and we're lucky to have him on our team.

Tribute to Velma Morrison

During the Spring 2010 commencement ceremony on May 15, Velma Morrison will receive an honorary doctorate from Boise State University. Morrison is only the eighth person to receive this honor from Boise State.

Morrison has maintained a partnership with the university for over thirty years, known for developing the Velma V. Morrison Center for the Performing Arts, as well as providing millions of dollars to numerous buildings and projects at Boise State University.

ENGLISH 102 & UNIVERSITY 106 are teaming up to help you get a jump-start on your research skills. Watch this video to learn more:

Are you ready to take English 102 in the fall and looking for an enriched experience? Consider participating in PoWeR (Project Writing and Research)! What is PoWeR? It's what happens when writing instructors and librarians work together so that students benefit. In PoWeR, you will take both a specified section of English 102 *and* a one-credit (pass/fail) section of University 106: Library Research.

All of the students enrolled in a designated section of English 102 will also be enrolled in an online section of UNIV 106, creating a hybrid learning community of researchers and writers. Within this combined four-credit experience, you'll get a lot of support for both your writing and research through integrated assignments. The content of both courses is coordinated so that University 106 activities work towards the completion of English 102 writing projects. Now that’s PoWeR!

Extended Albertsons Library Hours for Finals Week

Spring semester is fast becoming obsolete, but Albertsons Library has your back! We will be open extended hours during Dead week and 24 hours during Finals week.

Here's a breakdown for Dead Week:

7AM to 2AM Monday-Thursday, May 3-6
7AM to midnight, Friday, May 7
10AM to midnight, Saturday, May 8

During Finals Week:

Open 24 hrs starting 10AM Sunday, May 9 until 7PM Thursday, May 13
8AM to 5PM Friday, May 14
Only the 1st floor will be open after midnight during Finals Week.

Staff will be on hand to answer questions and check out first floor reserve materials. During Finals Week, security will be provided by the Boise Police Department; an officer will be on duty in the library all night and can provide escort service. Free coffee and treats provided each night (while supplies last!) by the Associated Students of Boise State University (ASBSU).

Preschool Masterpieces on Display

"Preschool Masterpieces: Self-Portraits of Boise Children"
Exhibit Dates: April 16-May 14
Curriculum Resource Center - 2nd Floor

Children ages 3-5 in Boise’s Head Start program painted their self-portraits after they studied portraits of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Artworks created in conjunction with the Picturing America project are displayed this month throughout Boise as part of the annual Week of the Young Child celebration. Picturing America was developed by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. This project allowed prints of 40 American masterpieces to be delivered to 20,000 Head Start centers in the U.S. for use in the curriculum. See if you can guess which child wears matching hair bows with her outfit every day. Stop by and view the exhibit!

Children's Book Authors Displays by Education Students

Stop by the Curriculum Resource Center in Albertsons Library this week to see children's book author projects created by students in Dr. Stan Steiner's Children’s Literature class. Dr. Seuss, Dav Pilkey (author of Captain Underpants series), Chris Van Allsburg (author of Jumanji), Eric Carle, Roald Dahl, and Idaho author Patrick McManus are just a few of the authors represented.

Margie Ruppel, Reference Librarian, taught students in this class how to locate children's literature and author information earlier in Spring 2010. Students then created displays about children's books and their authors that appeal to students in grades K-12, including brief bibliographies and lesson plans.

The coconut tree from Bill Martin's Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is featured in the photo at left. Displays will stay up through Friday, April 9 and are located on the North side of the 2nd floor, facing the Boise River.

Longer hours at the Library

Albertsons Library is pleased to support your last-minute research and study needs by expanding our hours at the end of the semester.

During Dead Week (12/7-12/12), we'll be open the following hours:
Monday, Dec 7 - Thursday, Dec 10: 1st floor open midnight to 2AM
Friday, Dec 11 - Saturday, Dec 12: extended from 7PM to midnight

Then the real fun starts in Finals Week, when the 1st floor of the library remains open 24 hours: starting 10AM on Sun Dec 13 - ending 7PM on Thurs Dec 17.

Security will be present during our extended hours. Please note that for extended hours, the library is open only to Boise State University students, faculty, and staff. Please refer to our nifty calendar for all library hours.

Journal Citation Reports "is a comprehensive and unique resource that allows you to evaluate and compare journals using citation data drawn from over 7,500 scholarly and technical journals from more than 3,300 publishers in over 60 countries."

Announcing the Cenarrusa Papers and Exhibits

Longtime Idaho Secretary of State Pete Cenarrusa has donated his political and personal papers to Boise State University. Documenting an extraordinary career in public service in both Idaho and on the international stage, the papers fill nearly 100 boxes and span the entire second half of the 20th century.

The son of Basque immigrants, Pete Cenarrusa was elected to public office 17 times—9 times as a state legislator and 8 times as Idaho Secretary of State—compiling a record of 52 years of continuous public service, the longest tenure of any officeholder in Idaho history. In a career of more than fifty years, from 1950 to 2002, Pete Cenarrusa became one of the most popular politicians in the state. Over the course of that half century, both he and his wife Freda were active in numerous political, civic, and cultural causes, and Pete Cenarrusa used his influence as a senior American statesman of Basque descent to work for peace in his ancestral homeland.

Albertsons Library celebrates this gift from Pete and Freda Cenarrusa by showcasing a new online exhibit, "The Public Career of Pete Cenarrusa." The Special Collections Department has also mounted an exhibit of photos, plaques, and other memorabilia in their display windows on the 2nd floor of Albertsons Library. The exhibit can be seen whenever the library is open through the end of the year.

PoWeR Up!

ENGLISH 102 & UNIVERSITY 106 are teaming up to help you get a jump-start on your research skills.

Are you ready to take English 102 in the spring and looking for an enriched experience? Consider participating in PoWeR (Project Writing and Research)! What is PoWeR? It's what happens when writing instructors and librarians work together so that students benefit. In PoWeR, you will take both a specified section of English 102 *and* a one-credit (pass/fail) section of University 106: Library Research.

All of the students enrolled in a designated section of English 102 will also be enrolled in an online section of UNIV 106, creating a hybrid learning community of researchers and writers.

Within this combined four-credit experience, you'll get a lot of support for both your writing and research through integrated assignments. The content of both courses is coordinated so that University 106 activities work towards the completion of English 102 writing projects. Now that’s PoWeR!

University Author Recognition Deadline

Albertsons Library’s fifth annual University Author Recognition will take place from 3:30-5 p.m. February 25, 2010, with a short program beginning at 4 p.m. in the library. Citations are now being accepted for articles, books and creative works produced by Boise State authors between Sept. 1, 2008, and Aug. 31, 2009. The deadline for submission is November 15, 2009.

To submit a citation of your work, go to the Faculty Authors website and click on “Send Citations.” Faculty have the option to review and edit information before submitting citations, including multiple citations from a single creator. The draft bibliography is updated in real-time; please take a moment to look over the bibliography, as your citation may already have been entered by library staff.

Recognition events for the fifth annual bibliography include:

A comprehensive online bibliography of scholarly and creative works by Boise State University faculty and staff created between Sept. 1, 2008, and Aug. 31, 2009
A display of books, articles and creative works in Albertsons Library during January and February 2010
A hosted reception in Albertsons Library with remarks by Provost Andrews and recognition from the university community

Learn how to help students make a term paper more than just an information gathering exercise. This hands-on workshop for faculty will use sample assignments to provide practical advice on how to get students to ask engaging research questions, use discipline-specific information tools and library collections, and evaluate and synthesize findings. Using this approach teaches students transferable skills in the research and writing process. Bring along a term paper assignment, if you’d like.

Hauntingly Good Reads at the Library

We all know the library houses a large collection of research materials at our disposal for all of the essays and research projects we are assigned throughout the semester. Did you know that it also has a wide array of items that can make your spine tingle, stir your imagination, and perhaps conjure up memories of Halloweens past? The horror genre has spanned many forms of media.

The library carries many of these incarnations within its walls. Reference books, books on the history of the genre, films, books about the films, biographies on iconic actors and directors, and even books on the aesthetics of horror are available for your consideration.

Literature is the perhaps the most obvious thing that would be in the library, so we will begin the tour there. Some of the authors the Albertsons Library has are Edgar Allen Poe, Algernon Blackwood, Guy de Maupassant, and Stephen King. H.P Lovecraft is a personal favorite of mine and his Cthulhu mythos has met with a revival in the last decade or so.

There are also biographies on the icons and studios involved in making the horror genre what it is today. The Lost One: A Life of Peter Lorre, Alfred Hitchcock: A Life in Darkness and Light, and Vincent Price: The Art of Fear (the title of which holds some humor for this writer, as Price had a radio show I listen to quite often called The Price of Fear) are only a few that we have at the library. There are several books that focus on Hammer Films, the company that produced a number of films starring Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing as Dracula and Dr. Van Helsing respectively.

We also have, in the Curriculum Resource Center (CRC), films as well as juvenile fiction and children’s stories. Again, if you have a more classic bent, we have the silent films Nosferatu and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, as well as the movie based on a novel by Shirley Jackson, The Haunting. For some of the juvenile literature, we have Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones, which also happens to be on the Banned Books list, as well as Ask the Bones: Scary Stories from Around the World. Even the little ones can get into the, if you’ll pardon the term, spirit of things with books like Teeny Tiny Tingly Tales and Cobwebs, Chatters, and Chills: A Collection of Scary Poems.

Those titles listed above are not even close to the vast amount of sources the Library contains. So, if you need an escape from the everyday grind of studies or just even need anything from the horror genre for a bit of research (it does happen), the Albertsons Library is a great resource.
