Extended Albertsons Library Hours for Finals Week

Spring semester is fast becoming obsolete, but Albertsons Library has your back! We will be open extended hours during Dead week and 24 hours during Finals week.

Here's a breakdown for Dead Week:

• 7AM to 2AM Monday-Thursday, May 3-6
• 7AM to midnight, Friday, May 7
• 10AM to midnight, Saturday, May 8

During Finals Week:

• Open 24 hrs starting 10AM Sunday, May 9 until 7PM Thursday, May 13
• 8AM to 5PM Friday, May 14
• Only the 1st floor will be open after midnight during Finals Week.

Staff will be on hand to answer questions and check out first floor reserve materials. During Finals Week, security will be provided by the Boise Police Department; an officer will be on duty in the library all night and can provide escort service. Free coffee and treats provided each night (while supplies last!) by the Associated Students of Boise State University (ASBSU).

Preschool Masterpieces on Display

"Preschool Masterpieces: Self-Portraits of Boise Children"
Exhibit Dates: April 16-May 14
Curriculum Resource Center - 2nd Floor

Children ages 3-5 in Boise’s Head Start program painted their self-portraits after they studied portraits of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Artworks created in conjunction with the Picturing America project are displayed this month throughout Boise as part of the annual Week of the Young Child celebration. Picturing America was developed by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. This project allowed prints of 40 American masterpieces to be delivered to 20,000 Head Start centers in the U.S. for use in the curriculum. See if you can guess which child wears matching hair bows with her outfit every day. Stop by and view the exhibit!

Albertsons Library on Your Phone

We have been working on a (beta) mobile version of Albertsons Library which includes resources like map locators, contact info, access to research databases, and our catalog, to name a few.
If you haven't tried it, please go to http://library.boisestate.edu/m/ and let us know what you think. This is a work in progress so we want to hear from you about what you like, what can be improved, or suggestions for future mobile projects.

Children's Book Authors Displays by Education Students

Stop by the Curriculum Resource Center in Albertsons Library this week to see children's book author projects created by students in Dr. Stan Steiner's Children’s Literature class. Dr. Seuss, Dav Pilkey (author of Captain Underpants series), Chris Van Allsburg (author of Jumanji), Eric Carle, Roald Dahl, and Idaho author Patrick McManus are just a few of the authors represented.

Margie Ruppel, Reference Librarian, taught students in this class how to locate children's literature and author information earlier in Spring 2010. Students then created displays about children's books and their authors that appeal to students in grades K-12, including brief bibliographies and lesson plans.

The coconut tree from Bill Martin's Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is featured in the photo at left. Displays will stay up through Friday, April 9 and are located on the North side of the 2nd floor, facing the Boise River.

Top Library Database Webinar Series

Throughout the month of April, Albertsons Library invites all faculty and staff to a series of webinars about several of the library’s top databases. These webinars will be “hands-on” with laptops available, and open to all faculty and staff.

• Learn how to search for Legal or Business information, or explore the new enhanced search interface of LEXIS NEXIS, one of the premiere academic research databases.
• Discover the wealth of high quality images, maps, paintings, photographs, and art available in the ARTSTOR database that can enhance and supplement teaching efforts.
• Become familiar with ENDNOTE WEB, an online bibliographic citation manager that can enhance the research and writing process for you and your students.
• Leverage the wealth of data available in the journal archive JSTOR, or go behind the scenes of Arts & Sciences Collection VIII to learn about the core materials it contains.

• Monday-Thursday 3/29-4/1: 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM
• Friday 4/2: 8:00 AM to 5 PM
• Saturday 4/3: CLOSED

New Databases!

Albertsons Library supports your research pursuits by purchasing access to databases that help you achieve academic success.

We recently acquired the following databases from Alexander Street Press, available via our Databases, Articles page:

• American History in Video - provides the largest and richest collection of video available online for the study of American history
• Counseling and Psychotherapy Transcripts, Client Narratives & Reference Works -  a searchable collection containing real transcripts of therapy and counseling sessions and first-person narratives illuminating the experience of mental illness and its treatment, as well as reference works to contextualize the primary material.
• Dance in Video - Dance in Video will contain 500 hours of dance productions and documentaries by the most influential performers and companies of the 20th century.
• Ethnographic Video Online - provides the largest, most comprehensive resource for the study of human culture and behavior–-more than 750 hours and 1,000 films at completion.
• North American Indian Drama - contains 172 plays by 33 playwrights, together with detailed, fielded information on related productions, theaters, production companies, and more.
