Have you found KP2?

KP2 in stacks.jpg
Find me somewhere in the library!
Though he has survived being attacked by his mother, surfing with children, flown out of his native Hawaii and placed in a research facility, KP2 has never met a human he did not like. Now KP2 is in Albertsons Library, waiting to make new friends.

In past years Albertsons Library has participated in Campus Read events and outreach efforts by hiding a plush animal in the book stacks for students to find (2012-2013, 2013-2014).

We continue on with this tradition with our cute KP2; he’s visited Walden Pond and the Scottish coast, panned for gold, and has read about different mariners throughout time.

Students may find KP2 anywhere in the library where he is curiously reading up on different topics and people.

They can also read more about KP2 the seal in this year’s Campus Read, The Odyssey of KP2: An Orphan Seal and a Marine Biologist’s Fight to Save a Species by Terrie M. Williams, which can be checked out from the library.

People who find KP2 should bring him to the Circulation Desk, where they will be awarded with a prize. Then KP2 will travel again to another part of the library to be found by another friend.

If you find KP2, share with us on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram, #FriendofKP2 #CampusRead @BSULibrary.

Scarlet Macaw to fly away for the last time!

Have you found the Scarlet Macaw? Our dear friend, Sebastian the Scarlet Macaw, is about to fly away for the last time. He has spent the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters here at Albertsons Library as an ambassador for the Campus Read selection, but now the semester is coming to a close.

Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw, by Bruce Barcott, is a non-fiction work that recounts the story of Sharon Matola. She became embroiled in a crusade to stop the construction of a dam that would flood the nesting grounds of the only scarlet macaws in Belize. According to the Fish and Wildlife Service macaws are listed in the “Least Concern” category of the endangered species list, they are at risk of extinction in Belize due to habitat destruction.

Sebastian’s life here at the library has not been quite so dramatic, but he has certainly done his share of migration. He has traveled to the 4th floor to find out more about his fellow birds. He has traveled to the 3rd floor and perused the works of Shakespeare, Dickens, and Austen. He has visited the Curriculum Resource Center on the 2nd floor and listened to music from Coltrane to Bach. Some days, he has simply perched atop the New Books section and watched students come and go through the library entrance.

Each time he has been returned to the Circulation Desk by a keen-eyed student who subsequently received an entry into a prize drawing! The drawing will occur Thursday, May 9th at 1:00 p.m., which means there is not much time left to find the Scarlet Macaw!

Prizes will include Sebastian himself, as well as copies of next semester’s Campus Read selection Half The Sky by Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. So keep your eyes peeled! The Scarlet Macaw could be on any floor of the library, even in plain sight. Return him to the Circulation Desk for your chance to win; there is no limit to the number of times you can enter!

Watch out for the Scarlet Macaw!

The Library is partnering with the Campus Read committee in an activity for all Boise State students. We've placed a very handsome Scarlet Macaw in the stacks for students to find.

If you find the bird, bring him down to the Circulation Desk and fill out a ticket to be entered into a prize drawing. After he is found, he will be reintroduced to the wild and will find another nest in the stacks for another student to discover.

Think about the themes of the book, The Last Flight of the Scarlet Macaw by Bruce Barcott, and maybe you'll find the Macaw's nesting place. The contest will last until the end of the academic year.

Good luck!

Recycled Poetry Contest results

Last week in honor of the Campus Read author visit on Wednesday, Albertsons Library held a Recycled Poetry Contest in which we cut up photocopied pages from the Campus Read book, The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, and invited students to create original poetry using the words from the book (along the lines of Magnetic Poetry, but without the magnets).

The contest took place during a three-hour fair on the quad, and students had to make up poems on the spot! We were delighted to receive 27 submissions, all of which were excellent, and we all had a great time playing with words at the fair.

We have a winner! Our three judges -- Janet Holmes and Tom Hillard from English, and Sara Seely from the Library -- reviewed all the submissions and ranked their top three. It was quite a challenge with all those wonderful entries, but only one could win. One poem appeared on all three of our judges' lists: the "Circle Poem by Ben." Congratulations to Ben for his winning poem! He will receive a $20.00 gift card to Starbucks.

Thanks so much to everyone who helped make our contest a success! We all had a great time and will plan to do this again next year.

Note: If you missed out on this contest, be sure to follow us on Facebook to keep track of library news and announcements in the future!
