50th Anniversary of JFK’s assassination
November 22, 1963 is a date that will live in infamy and today marks 50 years since the assassination of John F. Kennedy. As the nation mourned, newspapers documented the events for days. Special Collections and Archives has a few original copies of Idaho newspapers with these headlines:

Student Research Initiative Fellowships
Developed by Boise State students who wanted to expand research opportunities, the Student Research Initiative (SRI) fellowships provide money for both undergraduates and graduates to pursue their own research projects.
Unlike many funding opportunities, the SRI fellowships are open to all academic disciplines, and provides research opportunities to students who wouldn’t typically have the opportunity to engage in this kind of scholarship. Additionally, participants are given the opportunity to develop their presentation and publishing skills, while also engaging in interdisciplinary networking.
Since the launch of the program this past spring, students have done research on identifying isotopes in fossil bones, immigrant brides in Taiwan, chemical warfare agents in plants, and neoliberalism in universities. A collection of presentation abstracts and final reports can be found in ScholarWorks in the Student Research Initiatives collection.
Students who are interested in participating in the fellowship program can complete an application by October 25th. For complete information, please visit the Student Research Initiative website.

Student illustrator: Perry's Secret
![]() |
Book cover used with permission by the author. |
Alyssa Guy is a student majoring in Psychology at Boise State, a work study student helping process inter-library loan requests at Albertsons Library, and, as of May, also a published illustrator of a children's book. The book, Perry's Secret, was written by Jill Roberson-Blatt and published by Panacea Press in Tennessee.
The book's author, friend of a family member, connected with Alyssa after seeing her work on her Facebook page and deviantART, a sort of social media site for artists and art enthusiasts. Alyssa has been a fan of Japanese illustration styles in anime and manga, and the influence shows in her work, but for Perry's Secret she went for a slightly more realistic look for the pen and colored pencil drawings.
Perry's Secret is the second in a series of children's self help books by Roberson-Blatt. Alyssa has already been contracted to do illustrations for the next book in the series and hopes to begin work this summer. Perry's Secret will be available in the Curriculum Resource Center of Albertsons Library, and in Special Collections.

Films for Halloween
![]() |
Foggy nights (and days), crisp wind, and the changing environment conjure the time of year to curl up on the couch with a good horror movie, or a bad one for that matter.
Here is list of some horror films we have at the library:
- The Wizard of Gore: http://boisestate.worldcat.org/oclc/45748056Herschell Gordon Lewis is known as the Godfather of Gore, and this film delivers plenty. The gore in this film is far from realistic, and the acting leaves something to be desired, but that’s part of what makes this film so great. Montague the Magnificent has come on the scene, creating masterful illusions for his paying customers. When the lovely volunteers who are subject to these illusions start to die, a news reporter is ready to investigate. This is considered a splatter film, so be warned if you check this one out!
- The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari: http://boisestate.worldcat.org/oclc/50805098
This silent film focuses on a somnambulist who commits murders under a hypnotist's influence. It is one of the films that hails from the German Expressionist movement, and has influenced some modern film makers. The opening scenes from ‘The Queen of the Damned,’ for example, are shot in the same manner. - The Fly: http://boisestate.worldcat.org/oclc/182538990
David Cronenberg’s remake of this film is great! If you haven’t seen this one yet, what better time to check it out than Halloween? A scientist accidentally combines his own DNA with that of a common fly after it gets trapped in an experimental teleportation device he created. The sequel is also on the shelves (http://boisestate.worldcat.org/oclc/182538896). - The Last Man on Earth: http://boisestate.worldcat.org/oclc/57070225
This film is the original! Starring film legend Vincent Price as the only human survivor of a plague that swept the face of the earth, he must defend his home from vampires at night and forage for supplies during the day to survive. Price gives an incredible performance as the tortured, exhausted last man on earth. - The Birds: http://boisestate.worldcat.org/oclc/43793579
This is definitely a classic. When Melanie Daniels arrives in Bodega Bay, the small town is attacked by thousands of birds. Alfred Hitchcock directed the film. - Chyonghan Kajok (The Quiet Family): http://boisestate.worldcat.org/oclc/68815536
When economic tragedy hits the family, they take up residence in an old mountain cottage and open an inn. The guests check in, but they never check out. The family must cover up the serial murders occurring on their new property. - The Haunting: http://boisestate.worldcat.org/oclc/47977603
Adapted from Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, this psychological thriller tells the story of four people who come to the house to study its supernatural phenomena. - Cronos: http://boisestate.worldcat.org/oclc/86081224
This film was directed by Guillermo del Toro and stars Ron Perlman. Antique dealer Jesus Gris accidentally discovers the ancient Cronos device, which bestows eternal life to those who use it. However, there are certain disadvantages to using the device. A dying industrialist finds and reads the creator’s journal, and sends his nephew to retrieve the device.
get here in time for Halloween.

Boise State Scholarship Downloaded 100,000 Times
This February, ScholarWorks recorded its 100,000th full-text download. Launched in 2009, ScholarWorks is specifically designed to showcase Boise State scholarship and helps remove access barriers to publicly funded research.
The collection includes faculty publications, graduate scholarship, university publications, conference information, and institutional documents. In recent months the use of ScholarWorks has increased significantly with a high of over 12,000 Boise State documents downloaded in just November 2010 alone.
In addition to providing access to scholarship produced at Boise State, the service also provides SelectedWorks sites that highlight individual faculty member’s professional accomplishments.
