You are invited to be a part of a focus group aimed at better understanding the needs of students. What types of study spaces do you need? What services would you like to have? What resources and tools would help you in your pursuit of a degree?

The discussion will run no longer than 1 hour and your input will be confidential. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Please RSVP to tracybicknell-holmes@boisestate.edu or just show up.

eBooks: New and Improved!

Summer is finally here, which means it’s time to go outside and crack open a book or better yet download an eBook. If you are out of town or can’t make it to the library in person there is a fantastic selection of eBooks waiting for you through OverDrive.

OverDrive offers eBooks, audiobooks, and more for free through local libraries. You can check out eBooks through Albertsons Library at http://boisestate.lib.overdrive.com/, and thanks to their new improvements they’ve made it even easier to read on the go.

They now have an option called “dyslexic font.” This function gives the text a heavy-weighted bottom, which makes it easier to read for those who have dyslexia.

OverDrive has also changed their waiting list feature to show where your hold position is as a ratio. Previously, the site would only show what number you were on the waiting list after you had requested a hold. Now, they use a ratio which divides the number of people on hold by the number of copies available, which should give you a better idea of how long you’ll be waiting.

Upcoming Updates: They’ve redesigned the menu so it will slide out from the left instead of dropping down from the top. Now you’ll be able to open up the menu next to the page you're reading instead of covering it up. OverDrive will also offer Assistive as one of the options under readability settings, which will automatically change the text to “Dyslexic Font.”

Hopefully you’ll find these additions useful and find the perfect eBook this summer!

Shakespeare’s First Folio Dates Announced

Breaking News: We’re bringing one of the most famous books of all time to Boise State in 2016! Boise State University was selected as Idaho’s only stop on a national tour of Shakespeare’s First Folio—the original 1623 edition of the collected works by Shakespeare.

From August 20 - September 21, 2016 you’ll be able to stop by the Arts and Humanities Institute Gallery in the Yanke Building (http://ahi.boisestate.edu/gallery/) and see a copy of this historic book. The exhibition marks the first time Shakespeare’s Folio has ever been on display for the public in Idaho.

18 of Shakespeare’s plays that we know today including Macbeth, Julius Caesar, and Twelfth Night probably would have been lost to us without the First Folio. The book was compiled by two actors in Shakespeare’s company after the playwright died; about 750 copies were originally printed, and only 233 copies are known to exist today.  The Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington D.C. holds 82 copies of the First Folio, and in honor of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 2016, they are sending copies of the Folio to every state and to Puerto Rico beginning in January 2016.

During the exhibition, the First Folio will be opened to the most quoted line from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, “to be or not to be.” A multi-panel exhibition exploring Shakespeare’s impact, then and now, will be accompanied by digital content and interactive activities. Albertsons Library and the Arts and Humanities institute will also collaborate to create an exhibit celebrating the Idaho Shakespeare Festival’s 40th season in 2016.

Until then, we’ll be working with the Idaho Shakespeare Festival, the Boise Public Library and other local organizations to create a series of First Folio events for all ages while the exhibit is in town.  We’re so excited about this amazing opportunity for Boise State—if you have any questions or ideas, send them to librarian/archivist Gwyn Hervochon at gwynhervochon@boisestate.edu.

National Library Week

National Library Week, which began in 1958, celebrates libraries and librarians and what libraries offer communities. Long before National Library Week began the American Library Association (ALA), libraries, and librarians were working hard to support our entire country. One of those ways was begun in 1917, in conjunction with the War Department's Commission on Training Camp Activities, to provide library service to soldiers throughout the United States and overseas. This began the War Library Bulletin and the drive to establish libraries in all camps in all branches of service.

PUBLISHED MONTHLY BY THE AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION THROUGH
THE WAR SERVICE COMMITTEE AUGUST 1917 Libraries For Soldiers
AMERICAN LIBRARY ASSOCIATION. Link: http://bit.ly/1ze2TN9

According to the Personal Efficiency in Business, this library became the largest of its kind in the world by 1919. Through the cooperative efforts of libraries they created a "library war fund of $1,700,000 and from gift books worth as much more, it had been organized to serve in various capacities five million actual or potential clients, from over two thousand branches, stations and departments located in all parts of the world where American soldiers were training, fighting or convalescing", had 3,000,000 million holdings, distributing over 5,000,000 magazines.

The ALA was innovative for the time and noted a need that was unmet. The ALA, libraries, librarians and all library staff still practice that innovation to this day. Even more so with the advent of technology and the ability to put into each person's hand that which is the basis of libraries - information.

Student Art Books Now on Display

An exhibit of art books by students taking ART 108 is now on display on the first floor of the Albertsons Library. Art books are different from books about art in that they are original artworks in themselves, sometimes in the shape of books, sometimes using parts of the books to convey an artist’s message.

Some of the art books you’ll see in this exhibit are handmade books, while others use books in a variety of techniques including paper-mâché, paper folding, and innovative combinations of books and other materials. The exhibit will be on display through December 2nd.

The Esquire Service Club and Memorial Mall

As a member of the Boise State community, you have probably walked past the flagpoles on the Quad dozens of times and not noticed a plaque in the ground directly to the north. The plaque reads, "In Memory of the Idaho Men and Women Who Have Given Their Lives in the Service of Our Country." Before its current location, the plaque stood on one end of Memorial Mall that was in front of the library.

Memorial Mall was the idea of the Esquire Service Club, a group of GIs who raised and lowered the flags each morning. The club began soliciting money in October 1967 for the creation of a memorial with a fountain to honor Idaho men and women who gave their lives for the service of their country. The Esquires successfully raised the $17,800 needed for the memorial, receiving donations from local organizations including the Boise Bench Lions. Other university clubs provided help with the fundraising such as the Rodeo Club, Sports Car Club, Flying Broncos, and Hui O Hawaii. Members of the Esquires also assisted in the memorial's construction whose location was chosen to connect the recently completed library and Liberal Arts buildings.

The mall was dedicated on October 22, 1968, with President John Barnes and Idaho Senator Frank Church speaking. The memorial monument was unveiled by Mrs. Anthony Bellamy who had recently accepted the Silver Star medal awarded posthumously to her husband, the late Major Anthony Bellamy, for his service in Vietnam.

When the mall was removed in 1993 to make way for the expansion of the library, its plaque was moved to its current location in Memorial Plaza, a section of the Quad that houses the university's original flagpoles.

Happy Veterans Day!
