Supervising Student Employees 101

I recently took a workshop from Human Resources’ Employee Learning and Development which proved to be one of the best professional development opportunities I’ve had in a while, so I wanted to share my experience.  I took the workshop as part of the Employment Essentials certificate program here at Boise State (http://hrs.boisestate.edu/workshops/supervision-and-leadership/employment-essentials/).

Workshop presenter, Kip Spittle, from Learning and Development, did an awesome job, creating a workshop that was interactive with a lot of discussion. He also used a fun new program called Kahoot to give us a quiz. In the workshop Kip covered everything from the basics of student hiring and student employee fundamentals to generational differences, shared values, ethics and human rights. I especially enjoyed the video Kip used to help us understand generational differences, as it explained not only what those differences were, but how younger generations are trying to bridge the gap. It’s available on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vknHKTy1MLY.

I highly recommend this workshop for anyone who works with student employees; it will be offered again in the fall. Contact Human Resources at hremployeelandd@boisestate.edu or 208-426-2417 for more information about Employment Essentials workshops.

Congratulations to all of our excellent graduating seniors!

Each semester Albertsons Library honors senior graduating student assistants by placing a name plate dedicated to the student in a book of his/her choice. This semester we have 7 graduating student workers.

The Library could not function without our student employees. They tirelessly help patrons, check-out materials, pull books for staff and students, reshelve books, mail items, process new items, scan documents, assist patrons in the computer lab, move furniture and many other tasks.

Our graduates and their books:

Bader
-- Don't Be Sad by Aid Quarni
Melissa

Brittanie

Student Research Initiative Fellowships

Developed by Boise State students who wanted to expand research opportunities, the Student Research Initiative (SRI) fellowships provide money for both undergraduates and graduates to pursue their own research projects.

Unlike many funding opportunities, the SRI fellowships are open to all academic disciplines, and provides research opportunities to students who wouldn’t typically have the opportunity to engage in this kind of scholarship. Additionally, participants are given the opportunity to develop their presentation and publishing skills, while also engaging in interdisciplinary networking.

Since the launch of the program this past spring, students have done research on identifying isotopes in fossil bones, immigrant brides in Taiwan, chemical warfare agents in plants, and neoliberalism in universities. A collection of presentation abstracts and final reports can be found in ScholarWorks in the Student Research Initiatives collection.

Students who are interested in participating in the fellowship program can complete an application by October 25th. For complete information, please visit the Student Research Initiative website.
